Successful Murphy on Podium
South Dublin Taekwondo’s Player / Assistant Coach Alex Murphy recently attended the World Police & Firefighter Games in Northern Ireland on August 7th aided by assistant club Coach Dylan Leonard. The event which was a multi-sport games hosted nations from around the globe in sports such as track & field, triathlon, tennis, judo, karate, boxing, Taekwondo and many, many more. Alex who typically competes at -54kg weight entered the higher -58kg Division as the event was run under Olympic weight classes. The event was a great climax to a recent run of excellent training & competitive outings for Murphy who secured a gold medal in the division, topping podium ahead of his Hong Kong counterpart, who was coached by Sydney Olympic medalist Chi-Su-Gu of Chinese Taipei who also entered event and was noted as player of the tournament. 2nd Dan Murphy (20) is one of the lead instructors in SDTKD’s Taekwondo Tots Programme for 3-6 year olds won his bout in a well controlled 3-0 victory containing the lead throughout. Coach Taaffe concluded, ‘Modern Taekwondo has so many outlets now for sporting achievements, the WTF now has major events in the World Military Games, Deafalypics, Paralympics, World Masters Games, World Sports Festival, Sports Accord Combat Games, World University Taekwondo Championships and of course World Police & Firefighters Games 
as well as the many more mainstream events. With many players being afforded the opportunity of being the best in the World in their chosen sub-discipline, some of whom go onto much greater achievements, this certainly is a major contribution to the development, positive movement & cross-over of other martial artists to the World taekwondo Federation in recent times.’ Alex’s & event ocach Dylan are now recruiting more Taekwondo Tots for the 3-6 year old group in Tallaght Leisure Centre.
